Marguerite B. Hinkel, 96, passed away at her home in Bel Air, Maryland on Saturday, May 27, 2017. She was born on January 27, 1921 in Wilderness, Missouri to Lon Miles Simpson and Maude (Oesch) Simpson, and was the second of seven children. In 1942, she graduated from the Burge School of Nursing in Springfield, Missouri and began her nursing career as an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corp (USNR), serving her country during World War II. At that time, Marguerite met her future husband Leverett Hinkel, and they were married June 2, 1944 in Norman, Oklahoma.
While raising her children, Marguerite continued working as a pediatric nurse in Battle Creek, Michigan and at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She continued her nursing career with the Veterans Administration and retired in 1982 after serving 20 years at Fort Howard and Perry Point hospitals in Maryland.
As a longtime member of Bel Air United Methodist Church, Marguerite was active in the Mary Martha Circle and the knitting group. She enjoyed being a member of the Domino Girls where she was one of the youngest members. Marguerite was skilled at crocheting and enjoyed gardening and tending to her roses.
Marguerite is survived by her son, Robert Hinkel; daughter Lucille Bauersfeld and son-in-law George Bauersfeld; granddaughters, Kristin Smith and Amy Bauersfeld; great grandchildren, Gabe Smith, Sophie Smith and Beatrice Orsini; sisters, Mary Norris of Fremont, MO and Betty Dowler of Greenwood, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leverett Hinkel and son, Bruce Hinkel.
