Mrs. Margaret Dodge Smith 91, of Harford County, Maryland, peacefully entered into eternity on Christmas morning 2024, celebrating the day with her beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus. Born on April 23, 1933 in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the youngest daughter of the late John William Clabaugh, Sr. and Martha Elizabeth (Krug) Clabaugh.
Marge spent her early years in Baltimore City, where she married her teenage sweetheart Robert Dodge at the young age of 17. Determined to finish her education, she attained a GED and began her exciting journey through life. She and her husband initially settled in the Essex area of Baltimore County, and welcomed their first child, Sharon. Marge began her working career as a key-punch operator for Sears and Roebuck Company before being recruited by the Social Security Administration in Baltimore City. Her career later led her to Edgewood Arsenal at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where she served with dedication for 37 years until her retirement.
Marge was known for her boundless energy, kindness, and love for life. She cherished time with family and friends creating countless memories filled with laughter and joy. Her passion for music and dance led her to teach line dancing to seniors alongside her then husband, Jesse Smith, bringing happiness to many in their community. She also found joy in league bowling with her Mt. Christian Church family and friends where her enthusiasm and competitive spirit came to life.
Marge and Jesse shared a deep commitment to giving back to their community by volunteering for many years with Meals on Wheels to support those in need. The couple also embraced their venturesome spirit participating in the Senior Olympics in swimming, bowling, and track and field events proudly winning numerous medals over the years. Marge’s love for the outdoors was evident in her beautiful gardens and her appreciation for nature. She and Jesse spent countless hours birdwatching and enjoying visits to the Conowingo Dam to marvel at the eagles.
Marge is survived by her daughter, Carol Lang (Roger); and stepdaughter Cheryl Gasdia (Mike); her beloved nieces, Susan Baucom (Jimmy) and Peggy Talbott; her three grandchildren, Nicole Gibson (John), Karra Lang, and Hanna Lang; her three great-grandchildren, Violet and Zachary Gibson, and Eli Walker (Lang); and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 27 years, Jesse P. Smith (2017); daughter Sharon A. Cardarelli (2024) and grandson Gregory D. Cardarelli (2004); siblings Dorothy, Kay, Ella, Beatrice, and John; and niece Louise Amoss.
Marge’s legacy of love, resilience, and generosity will forever live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She leaves behind a life well-lived and a family profoundly grateful for her love and guidance.
