Margaret Sawyer Horky

MARGARET (PEG) SAWYER HORKY, age 90, of Bel Air, MD, died peacefully surrounded by family on March 5, 2008 at Harford Memorial Hospital, Havre de Grace, MD. Born in Elizabeth City, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Edward and Stella Margaret Owen Sawyer and wife of the late John Ralph Horky, M.D who passed away in 1971. She received a nursing degree from Franklin Square School of Nursing and then worked at Union Memorial Hospital where she met her husband. She was married in Baltimore and then moved to Harford County where she remained the rest of her life. She was a long time member of St. Margaret Catholic Church in Bel Air and the Evergreen Garden Club in Harford County. She was a volunteer for the Harford County Office of Economic Development and was on the advisory board for the Churchville Recreational Council. She loved sewing for anyone that needed it, including needlework, smocking, embroidery, and crocheting; she made several wedding dresses for her children and grandchildren, and the family Christening gown. She enjoyed traveling extensively, including Scandinavia, Rome, Egypt, Israel, Ireland, Alaska, and her favorite destination of all, the Outer Banks.

Mrs. Horky is survived by two sons, Ralph Edward Horky (Susan) of Gainesville, FL and Peter Bernard Horky (Sue) of Forest Hill, MD; eight daughters, Joanne Horky Rice (Roger) of Bel Air, MD, Cecilia Horky Brody (Hebert, deceased) of Bound Brook, NJ, Diane Horky Dixon (David) of Street, MD, Josephine Horky Wheeler (Tom) of Chesapeake City, MD, Mary Horky McLean (Jim) of Pylesville, MD, Paula Horky Ennis (Steve) of Baltimore, MD, Alesia Horky Reedy (Stanley) of Aberdeen, MD, and Donna Horky Kitchin (Llew) of Winchester, VA; one sister, Dorothy Mae Carver of Elizabeth City, NC; twenty-five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
