Manuel V. Gatchalian, M.D, age 82, of Abingdon, Maryland passed away on October 14, 2017 at his home. Born in San Simon, Philippines to Francisco and Edilberta (Vergara) Gatchalian, he was the youngest of nine siblings. He retired in 2005 from Union Memorial Hospital as Chief of Otolaryngology and practiced medicine there for over 40 years. Because of his unpretentious demeanor he was revered by his peers in the medical society and by members of the Filipino community. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Community Service Award which is chosen by the Baltimore County Advisory Council. He lectured in several medical symposia and acted as resource speaker at various continuing medical education seminars for healthcare professionals. He was a member of FAPI (Foundation for Aid to the Philippines, Inc.), APPM (Association of Philippine Physicians in Maryland), Katipunan, and was a former member of the Orchid Society. He loved to garden, collect watches, golf, grow orchids, play piano and loved his salt water aquarium.
Dr. Gatchalian is survived by his wife of 49 years, Wanda Elizabeth Gatchalian; children, Keith Gatchalian, Kasia Gatchalian and Kyle Gatchalian.
