Mildred Virginia Shanklin, 93, of Bel Air, Maryland passed away peacefully at home on April 20, 2016. One of nine children, she was born on January 14, 1923 to the late Charles Howard Streett and Emma A. Whiteford Streett of Long Green, Md. A graduate of Towson High School, her first job was as a switchboard operator at the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company in Bel Air. In 1944 she married LeRoy Edward Shanklin. They began their life together in Fork, Md. where they were active in the Fork Christian Church for many years and raised two children. Virginia also worked in the family Glen Arm Grocery, the Prosser Engineering Co. and served as Postmaster of the Fork Post Office. Virginia was an active member of the Bel Air American Legion Post #39 Auxiliary and a Gold Star Mother, having lost her son, PFC Roy Edward, 554 Engineering Co. to injuries in the Vietnam War.
Virginia lived her faith in quiet dignity, serving her family, friends, neighbors and her church, blessing them with her kind ways.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Leroy Edward Shanklin and daughter, Judie Lizewski of Long Island, NY, and sister, Betty Ann Lawrence of Corvalis, Oregon. She is the grandmother of John Lizewski of Annapolis; JoRoy Lizewski and wife Susan of Easton; Julie Hanus and husband, Ed, of Mattituck, Long Island, NY. Her great grandchildren include Lauren, Sarah, Abby, JT and Brynn Lizewski, and Ansley, Kyle and Claire Hanus.
Virginia is pre-deceased by her son Roy; granddaughter, Jodie Lizewski, and son-in-law, Joseph Lizewski.
