LTC Luis Alvarez, U.S. Army (Ret), age 71, of Bel Air, MD, died on August 2, 2009 at his home. Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Luis Herminio Alvarez and Maria Luisa Garcia of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. His lifetime careers included active and reserve military service, including 20 months in Vietnam, civil service at AMSAA, APG, and private practice as a licensed clinical social worker offering individual and marriage counseling and divorce mediation services. An active member of St. Margaret Catholic Church, Luis was a member of the Men's Fellowship and Bible study group and served on the board of Birthright. He served many years as a counselor for SARC and in the past had been actively involved in Toastmasters.
LTC Alvarez is survived by his wife of 16 years, Christiane O. Garcia and step children Manuel S. Garcia, Evania M. Garcia, and Michelle A. Garcia of Bel Air, MD; son Luis Alfredo Alvarez, daughter Carmen Sylvia Alvarez, twin sister Sylvia Alvarez, mother, and six grandchildren of the Guaynabo and San Juan areas in Puerto Rico.
