Louis Albert Hickman Sr., of Bel Air, Maryland, departed his life from Upper Chesapeake Medical Center on December 14, 2002. Born on September 14, 1924 in West Point VA, but reared by his mother in Richmond VA, he was the son of the late Lillian Powell Hickman and George Hickman. He was 78. He received his early education in Richmond VA. In June of 1944, he went in the Army when he was 19 years old serving under the General George S. Patton. After the Korean Conflict, and World War II, he became the first black instructor in the Mobility Training Department of the Ordnance Center. He retired from active duty in 1963, a master sergeant, but continued to teach as a civilian instructor until 1980. The military was an important part of his life. He received many medals for his twenty years of military service. On the 50th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, he received the Jubilee of Liberty from French President René Garrec. He also was awarded a certificate of merit from commanding office Major Paul Schuppener. He also received the European Theater of Operation U.S. Army Certificate of Merit. He was a charter member of the VFW in Perryman, Maryland since 1950. He was affectionately known as “Sarge”. He was married to late Margaret Myrtle Boyden Hickman.
Mr. Hickman is survived by his children, Betty Jean Smith of Joppatowne (husband, James Smith), Linda Arlene Brown of Philadelphia, PA (husband, Paul Brown), Vanessa Dale Hickman of Bel Air, Louis A. Hickman Jr. of Bel Air; two sons-in-law, Wilbert Frank Stanton of Abingdon and Cleveland Williams Sr. of Philadelphia; grandchildren Hope Carmen Davis of Va., Kristin Kent White of Baltimore (husband, Charles White), Valenteen Kent of U.S. Army, Killeen TX, Jeri Elaine Smith of Edgewood, Karla Beth DeLaRosa of Andrew Air Force Base (husband Agustin DeLa Rosa), Cleveland Williams Jr. of Las Vegas, Nevada, Danielle Mitchell of Philadelphia, PA. (husband David Mitchell), Sharla Williams of Philadelphia, PA, Jacob Hickman of Bel Air, Terence Christopher Hickman of Bel Air; twenty-eight great grandchildren; a sister, Helen Morton of Richmond VA; two brothers-in-law, Bert Hash and Frank Mayo of Aberdeen; and a nephew James Belcher of CA. He was preceded in death by his children, John Boyden Stout, Lois A. Hickman and Faith Myrteen Stanton; a brother James Hickman Sr.; and three sisters Classie Belcher, Lillian Brown and Corrine Davis. He is also survived by a host of other family and friends.
