Lloyd "Alvin" Harris, age 63, of Joppa, Maryland was called home by his heavenly Father on June 11, 2024. Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, he was the son of Nora (Akins) Ellis and the late Lloyd Alfred Harris.
Alvin accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior as a young man. He rededicated his life as he matured in the Lord in 2019 at New Hope Baptist Church in Bel Air, Maryland. Alvin loved God’s word and had a gift for retaining scripture readings. He cherished the preached word from his Pastor Mark Nolan and from his lifetime friend Bishop Keith Holley. He was known to come home after church service and mimic and recite the preached word and would often say “man you should have been there, Pastor tore that word up today”
At the early age of 13, he started his work career at Harris Bros. Trash Removal, where he learned how to labor hard and develop great work ethics. However, he quit every other week, saying “I ain’t going back over there, Rogee nem keep on antagonizing me”. But on Sunday nights, “Bill” would call him and say, boy you better be on that truck come tomorrow morning.
He received his early education in Harford County School System and later pursued his GED from Harford Community College. Alvin had a brilliant mind, so he decided he didn’t want to bother with sitting in class to study for the GED. Instead, he went straight for the exam and “aced” it within a half hour. Alvin was said to have the mind of an elephant – he never forgot anything. Upon receiving his GED, not sure of what career path to take, he decided to join the Military. After leaving the military, he joined along with his brother and family members at his Dad’s business, Lloyd’s Home Sales in Joppa, Maryland. He continued to work with his Dad off and on all his adult life.
Known as “Mr. Fix-it”, he did many jobs for many different people. There was no trade or job that he could not or would not tackle, even with his disability he conquered them all. He was very meticulous, whether he was working on a floor, a door, a wall, great or small, landscaping and all, he got it done.
Alvin loved everyone, but he had a great love for his nieces and nephews. They formed a close bond with their Uncle, seemingly when they were born. When they were just little children, he wrote them letters every two weeks. They couldn’t wait to receive their “uncle letters”, running to the mailbox every two weeks, anxiously awaiting their letters. They thought their Uncle was the funniest man around. He shared many belly aching, back bending, hilarious stories with them, some true and many made up. Family was what kept Alvin going. He had a great bond and spent an enormous amount of time with all of his Uncles, Aunts and Cousins. Alvin also had a love for antique cars and was so very proud of his red 1988 Cadillac, affectionately calling it, “The Eleganz”. Alvin had a love for music with Earth, Wind & Fire being one of his favorite groups, working on cars, and yardwork.
He was preceding in death by his Father Lloyd Harris (Rhonda), Step-father Kenneth Ellis (Nora), his brother Alfred Harris, 2 uncles and 4 aunts.
In addition to his loving wife, who took care of him with all her love, Lloyd is survived by his wife Rhonda Harris; his Mom, Nora Ellis; sons, Lloyd Harris, Jr, and Sammy Harris; sisters, Lisa Harris (Tim), and Inez Williams (Roger) and Tisha Washington (Robert); step-daughter, Gerelle Hood, step-grandson, Jamal Burgess, step-brother, Kenneth (KK) Ellis, step-sister, Tosha Brown, Step-Mom, Rhonda Harris (Lloyd) and a host of Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.
