Lewis E. Espey, age 85, of Bel Air, MD, passed away on August 5, 2012 at his home. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Lewis Ernest Espey and Catherine Elizabeth MacNeal and husband of the late Frances Pricilla Espey. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he retired after 25 years from Edgewood Arsenal where he worked as a mechanic and from Harford County Public Schools where he worked as a maintenance engineer for several years. A longtime member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, he enjoyed teaching Sunday school, was the Sunday School Superintendent and was in charge of the cemetery for many years. A member of Abingdon Fire Company for 48 years, he served there as the Chief and President and was also a member of the Maryland State Fireman's Association Hall of Fame and Harford-Cecil County Association Hall of Fame. He served on many state and county fire related committees and set up Fire Prevention displays throughout the State of Maryland.
Mr. Espey is survived by his daughters, Betty L. Mull and husband, Donald and Shirl A. Eller, all of Bel Air, MD, Laurie M. Moffett of Fallston, MD, Karen L. Backus and husband, Jeffrey, of Salem, IN, Susan G. Espey of Ludowici, GA and Lois E. Espey of Street, MD; stepson, Robert W. Ellis and wife, Marie, of Joppa, MD; brothers, Howard, Richard and William Espey all of Forest Hill, MD; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brother, Robert Espey and sister, Margaret Campbell.
