Leonard John Smelter, age 92, peacefully passed away on January 2, 2024, at his home in Bel Air, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Leonard and Evelyn (Tuerk) Smelter and the beloved husband of the late Mildred (Suitt) Smelter.
After graduating from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Leonard immediately entered the U. S. Air Force. He proudly served his country during the Korean War as a top-notch airplane mechanic.
Leonard was a member of the Spry Island Sailing Club, where he cultivated his love of sailing the Chesapeake Bay. As a sailor and mechanic, he had remarkable skill and ingenuity and could fix anything. He was the best handyman.
Leonard shared 67 1/2 wonderful years of marriage with his late wife, Millie. Together, they created a legacy filled with love, family, and cherished memories. Leonard is survived by his twin daughters Lisa Cadiz and Laurie Biggs, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Leonard will be remembered most for his remarkable contentment, commitment to family and cultivating his own destiny.
