Leland "Lee" A. Watermeier

On January 15, 2022, Leland A. "Lee" Watermeier, age 94, of Bel Air, Maryland passed peacefully into God’s arms with his family’s present. Born in Carlinville, Illinois, Lee was the son and only child of Albert and Clara (Mitchell) Watermeier. He was the devoted husband of the late Marjory Watermeier. They met while students at Blackburn College and both graduated in 1950 with BS degrees in chemistry. The couple was married for 67 years before Marjory passed in 2018, after Leland had taken care of her for several years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1987 as Chief of the Interior Ballistics Laboratory of the U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratories at APG where he worked for 35 years. Leland was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Bel Air for many years where he served as a deacon, an elder and taught Sunday School. Early and even later in his married life, Lee enjoyed traveling, woodworking, gardening and doing yard work, and being active in his children’s lives. Always an enthusiastic board game player, he excelled at scrabble and would beat most opponents. After moving to Brightview Assisted Living, Leland discovered his love for colored pencils and completed almost 700 pictures. He took great pride in his gift and handed them out to anyone who showed appreciation. Beloved by his new Brightview family, Leland was known to be a true gentleman.

In addition to his wife and parents, Lee was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Janet Wheeler in January 2020. 

Lee is survived by his daughters, Linda Landis, Nancy Hewitt, and Lori Redding; sons-in-law, Wayne Landis, Troy Hewitt, and Dan Wheeler; grandchildren, Kelcey (David) Phillips, Margaret Landis, Eva Landis, Albert (Lexie) Hewitt, Madeline (Zach) Slebzak, Gretchen Redding and James Redding, Jr.; and newborn great-granddaughter, Cecilia Hewitt.
