Lawrence "Larry" Charles Minogue, age 68, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away on December 17, 2024, at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Jerome and Theresa (Peach) Minogue and husband of Barbara (Smeton) Minogue.
Larry grew up in Randallstown, Maryland, and moved to Freeland, Maryland in 1968, along with his brothers and sister, Jo Ann. He was a 1974 graduate of Hereford High School. Early in his career, he co-founded Minogue Brothers, Inc., a family painting and home improvement business. He and his brothers, Rick, Don, and Tim, dedicated themselves to painting commercial and residential buildings as well as window installations and other home improvements in and around Maryland. In his early 20’s, Larry attended Loyola College for a few years. He was well versed in stocks and at one time was employed part-time as a stockbroker and financial advisor. Known for his generosity, he frequently helped others learn to manage their finances sustainably. In Colorado, Larry became a NABCEP certified Solar Engineer and started Antero Solar, a business where he and his daughter Theresa designed, built, and maintained grid tied and off grid residential solar arrays. Larry acquired his CDL license and drove a handicap bus serving individuals with Cerebral Palsy and those in need of dialysis, a role he embraced to connect with and support those in need of transportation in California.
Larry’s passions included hiking, running, and cycling. As an ultra-runner, he completed over 55 races of marathon length or longer, including the Comrades Marathon in South Africa and the1999 Arkansas Traveler, a 100 mile race where he finished in under 24 hours. He was a member of the RASAC running group in Harford County and participated in a Trail Maintenance Crew during his time living in California. While in Colorado, he hiked all of the 14,000 foot mountains, making him part of an elite group of mountain climbers. Larry enjoyed teaching his children, Dan and Theresa, the joy of mountain climbing. He had a special passion for the desert. While living in New Mexico, he often climbed and hiked in the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque, as well as biked extensively in the wilderness between there and Santa Fe. Larry even designed and led several guided tours through these areas for his sister Jo Ann and mother Theresa.
Larry’s adventurous spirit also led him to learn flight mechanics to become a certified private pilot. His love of flying allowed him to appreciate the geography of Southern Colorado and the Southwest from a different vantage point. He often invited friends and family to join him on his flights.
As an accomplished builder, he combined his technical skills with creativity to complete several home remodeling projects. Larry designed and remodeled homes in MD, CO, CA, and NM, with his wife Barbara throughout their adventurous moves across the country.
Larry was also a talented musician who played the dobro slide guitar, acoustic guitar, and mandolin. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was a member of the Autumn Ridge Bluegrass Band, sharing his love for music with others. With an adventurous and humorous spirit, Larry was a lifelong learner, and never met a stranger. Wherever he lived or traveled across the United States, he formed meaningful connections and built lasting friendships.
In 2006, Larry received a living donor transplanted kidney from his dear friend and frequent hiking companion, Jim Waller. This gift gave Larry another 18 years to follow his outdoor pursuits and build lasting memories with everyone he loved.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; daughter, Theresa Marie Minogue; son, Daniel Lawrence Minogue; stepson, Zachary Curtis Steeg; grandson, Declan Lawrence Minogue; brothers, Richard Francis Minogue (Sharon Peterson Rusnak), Donald Jerome Minogue (Karen), and Timothy Thomas Minogue (Debbie Reitz); sister, Jo Ann Hedemann (Robert); and many cherished nieces and nephews.
