Laura Chamberlin Campbell was a artist, Mayflower descendant, brown-eyed lady from two of Americas oldest families, passed away on January 17th at age of 96 in Forest Hill, Maryland. Born in Washington DC on November 14, 1918, to Edward M. and Vera McFalane Moses Chamberlin, Laura grew up on the family estate in Waterford, Virginia, wintering in the familys Boston house with the ladies. She attended Miss Madieras school and was privately schooled in oil painting and art in Boston, where she met Arthur Vincent Campbell III, at a Harvard party. There were married in 1944. They purchased a run-down farm in Maryland horse country; restored the 18th century farm, and created Xanatl Farm, home of fine Throughbreds and Angus cattle. There Laura raised 4 children. Laura raised her children with a hot breakfast every morning, a lengthy three-course dinner each night-jacket required- and evening readings aloud of the classics; From Beatrice Potter to Dickens. She also taught art at Saint James Academy and painted in oil with friends in the countryside. Laura had an insatible appetite for learning a variety of subjects from Zen Buddhism to traditional Scottish knitting. She studied Cantonese and travelled the world extensively with her husband. Laura is survived by her four children, Laura Edith Campbell MacLaurin of Berryville, VA, Arthur Vincent Campbell IV of Summerville SC, James Moses Campbell of Baltimore, MD, Patrick Stevenson Campbell of White Hall, MD and her grandson David Alexander MacLaurin MD, MPH of CO. Laura was predeceased by her husband Arthur V. Campbell, and her granddaughter, Laura Marie MacLaurin of Berryville, VA. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
