Latham Oliver Martin 92, of Joppa passed away peacefully on August 8, 2016 after a brief illness at his home at Brightview, Westminster Ridge in Westminster surrounded by family. Born January 18, 1924 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Howard and Mary Kraus Martin.
In 1944, he joined the Army serving during World War II and later pursued continuing education classes at Harford Community College. Over the years he worked for Julian P. Frieze & Sons, Glen L. Martin, and F. X. Hooper & Co. as a machinist before becoming an Inspector at Edgewood Arsenal for the United States Government whereupon he retired.
In 1947, he married Helen Elizabeth Martin, his loving wife of 65 years. Sadly, Helen predeceased him passing away suddenly in 2012.
He was an active supporter of the Friends of Jerusalem Mill where he served as an Ambassador. He devoted an incredible amount of time creating and building materials to restore the structures that are on display at the Mill. He also was an advocate for the Little Gunpowder Improvement Association. Additionally, he enjoyed woodworking, restoring furniture, auctions, collecting stamps, spending time with his family, friends and dear neighbors.
After the death of his wife, Mr. Martin made the difficult decision to move to Westminster to be closer to his family, where he resided until his death. He enjoyed the new friendships that he made with the residents and the staff as well as the activities; especially the Country Rides.
He is survived by nephew Jake Townsley and wife Anne of Westminster, Adoring great nieces Kati Townsley and Beth Townsley Flanagan and her husband Matt, and great nephew Colin and great niece Taylor Flanagan, all of Westminster, nieces Audrey Harkins of Joppa and family, and Penny Mann and family of Salisbury. He is predeceased in death by his four brothers and a sister.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Martin's memory to Friends of Jerusalem Mill P.O. Box 237 Kingsville, MD 21087 and Carroll Hospice (Dove House), 292 Stoner Ave. Westminster MD 21157.
