Larry Mills

LARRY MILLS, age 60, of Bel Air, MD, died on August 27, 2007 at his home. Born in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late William Eugene and Margaret Teresa Stakem Mills. A Harford county resident for over 35 years, he taught in the Harford county public school system beginning in February of 1969 at Joppatowne Elementary, where he later became principal. In 1992, he opened Abingdon Elementary as its first principal, and he considered his organization of the staff and operations of this new school his proudest accomplishment. He completed his educational career as principal at Youth’s Benefit Elementary School, retiring in 2002. He served on the Board of the Local Principal’s Association and was president of the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals. (1998-1999). A Terrapin Club member, he enjoyed attending the football games and tailgating with friends. Known for his rich vocabulary, one of his favorite pastimes was completing the daily crossword puzzle. He participated in every Bel Air Town Run, completing his last one in June. Ironically, after a long career in education, he passed away on the first day of school.

Mr. Mills is survived by his wife of 29 years, Maureen Monahan Mills of Bel Air, MD; one son, Colin Thomas Mills of Baltimore, MD; one daughter, Caitlin Rose Mills of Baltimore, MD; one sister, Paula James and her husband, Butch, of Midland, MD; cousin, Julie Fraley of Frostburg, MD; and niece, Maggie Gatian and her husband, Corey, of Midland, MD.
