Killow Harden Charles “Kig” “Jerry” Deel left us on January 2, 2019, in his home surrounded by those he loved and those who loved him. Always happy to be outside - working in his garden, handlin’ them squirrels, or just enjoying the weather - Pop-Pop was an outdoorsman at heart. Hailing from Grundy, VA, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Jerry was the middle of nine brothers and sisters, six of whom pre-deceased him, and twin sisters, Irene Rowe and Lorraine Farmer, of Leemaster, Virginia. A decorated World War II veteran, he served in the Philippines as a telephone and telegraph lineman in the 237th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion and was designated an expert in marksmanship. After his honorable discharge, he continued his career of service working at Edgewood Arsenal. His final profession, lasting well into his 80s was as a guard at the Bel Air Courthouse, where he is still fondly remembered. Although he was often quiet, his carefully selected words usually cut right to the heart of the matter, sometimes poignant, usually funny. He loved duct tape and liquid wrench (known to some as WD-40) and never met something broken that he wouldn’t try to fix. Pop-Pop loved being surrounded by his family, near and far. Sing-a-longs, playing the banjo, guitar (or even using his cane when that was all that was around) made for great fun for us all. He loved a good meal - biscuits and gravy were a long time favorite, and is remembered lovingly by his children and grandchildren for his delicious waffles; we could taste the love in every bite. Jerry was welcoming and loved by all those that knew him. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Theresa. They were blessed with five children, twins, Glen (deceased 2011) and Gary, Carol, Diane (and Joe Dugan) and Catharine (and Chris Dunkes); seven grandchildren, Athena (and Ken Gaalswyk), Elisha (and Todd Lynch), Joey (and Naomi Crissley), Aaron (and Christina Dugan), Brittany (and Matt Jayko), Bryce (and fiancé Ashley Lea) and Bethany (and Keith Trageser); and six great-grandchildren, Evan, Davis, Eden, Alyssa, Nathan and Ethan, and a seventh making her appearance later in 2019. He will be very missed by his family, but we know the Deel Reunion going on in Heaven is quite a party! Byeluvya
