Kathryn "Kay" Jarusek Smith, age 80, daughter of the late Elmer and Helen Jarusek, and a lifetime resident of Abingdon, passed away at home on October 31, 2008 after a long illness. She enjoyed bingo, cards, dancing, and going out with friends and family. She had worked for Bata Shoe Company for 28 years as a supervisor and ran a successful restaurant for ten years, Smith's Restaurant, on Main Street in Bel Air in the 1970's with her husband, Thayer "Smitty" Smith. Later, she also worked at the Country Inn, Hidden Brook, and Darnell Jewelers.
She is survived by daughters, Karen Lynne Carter of Bel Air, MD and Steva Darnell of Street, MD; son, John Smith of Beaver Dam, WI; two granddaughters, Katie Smith and Samantha Darnell; one grandson, John E. Smith; one great-granddaughter, Amber Blizzard; and ex-husband, Thayer "Smitty" Smith. She was predeceased by two daughters, Helen J. Smith-Grimes and Sherry Smith; and three brothers, Frankie, Kenny, and Andy Jarusek.
A private memorial service will be held and she requested no flowers.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Daniel Burkhardt, Brenda Kelly, Catherine Edwards, and Harford Hospice for their support and friendship during her illness.
