Julius F. Blum, age 91, of Bel Air, MD passed away on February 2, 2018 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. Born on April 25, 1926 in Berlin, Germany, he was the son of Paul Julius and Jean Louise (Treptow) Blum. He immigrated to Holland in 1937 and then to America. The Blum family arrived in New York in 1939 and eventually settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where Julius attended Collinwood High School.
At age 18, he volunteered for early induction into the military. He returned to Europe near the end of the war, serving as an Army intelligence specialist. In 1948 he decided to make the Army his career. He retired in 1966 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He then served twenty additional years as a civilian instructor and technician at Fort Benning, Georgia and Aberdeen Proving Ground. After his final retirement from the Department of Defense, he served for many years as a volunteer for the AARP Tax-Aide Program.
He enjoyed bowling, playing poker, pinochle and other card games. He also liked working on and programming computers. He was an author, writing his memoirs. He was very creative and enjoyed working with the drama group and playing in the drum circle at Avondell.
Mr. Blum is survived by his wife of 67 years, Patricia A. Blum; daughter, Carol A. McMurrain of Dillon, MT; brother, Dennis Blum of Phoenix, AZ; grandson, Daniel Foisy of Brunswick, GA; two granddaughters, Sarah Foisy of Oroville, CA and Rose Foisy of Athens, GA; and great-grandson, Ethan Windsor of Brunswick, GA.
