Julian Brown McAuley of Bel Air, died October 5, 2011 at his home. He was 83.
Mr. McAuley was born in Statesville, NC, a son of the late Junius (June) Odell and the late Stella Brown McAuley.
Mr. McAuley graduated from Statesville High School and North Carolina State College with a degree in textile technology and was employed in the textile and garment industries for 11 years in North and South Carolina and Virginia.
He entered civilian service with the Department of the Army at Fort Lee, Virginia, in 1961 involved in the testing of personal equipment for the soldier. He was transferred to Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) in 1971 and assigned to the Materiel Test Directorate. In 1973 he was assigned to the Test and Evaluation Command as a project director responsible for test management of a number of items of personnel equipment. In 1978 he was transferred to the Office for International Cooperative Programs, Army Materiel Command, Alexandria, VA with duty station at APG.
Mr. McAuley retired in 1991 after serving 28 years of government service and received the Army Decoration for the Meritorious Civilian Service. His last assignment was the civilian Chief of the International Materiel Evaluation Division assigned to the Army Materiel Command. During his career he was involved in the testing and evaluation of a variety of U.S. and Allied developed personnel armor, chemical and environmental protective clothing and equipment, uniforms, sleeping bags, chemical detection devices, bridge erection boats, materials handling equipment and personal parachutes.
He grew up in the Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon and usher in North Carolina and Virginia. While a member of the Bel Air United Methodist Church he served on the committee for Cub Scout Troop 777 and was an usher. He loved his family, enjoyed traveling and published three family genealogies following his retirement.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rewey Napier McAuley and sister, Martha Soltesz of Greensboro, NC. He is survived by his children, Mark L. McAuley and his wife Diana, of Bel Air, Beth M. Windsor and her husband, Todd, of Severna Park, and Debra M. Sellers and her husband Kenneth, of Forest Hill; six grandchildren Christina and Emily McAuley of Bel Air, Jayme and Shelby Windsor of Severna Park, and Amanda and Brett Sellers of Forest Hill.
It is requested that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions may be made to Bel Air United Methodist Church, 21 Linwood Avenue, Bel Air, MD 21014.
