JUDITH P. WESTING, of Bel Air, retired Professor of Nursing at Harford Community College, died of cancer on January 3, 2003 after a long illness. She was 64. Born in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Page M. Huff. In her 28 year career at Harford Community College, Mrs. Westing served as chairperson of the Nursing Division for six years, and taught well over a thousand students to become registered nurses. Many of those nurses still serve the Harford County community and the surrounding Baltimore area. Mrs. Westing received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1960 from the University of Maryland School of Nursing, Baltimore, MD. In 1967 she received her Masters of Arts – Medical – Surgical Nursing from New York University, New York, N.Y. Upon graduating from the University of Maryland, Mrs. Westing served as a 1st Lt. in the Army Nurse Corps from 1960to 1963. She was stationed at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado and the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. After leaving the army, Mrs. Westing was a Nursing Instructor for several years at Peninsula General Hospital Diploma School of Nursing, Salisbury, MD.
Mrs. Westing’s professional and community service included memberships in the American Nurses Association, Maryland Nurses Association, past ANA N-Stat leader, past MNA Board member and Delegate to the ANA, past MNA District 7 President, past Chairperson MNA Task Force on Nursing Education, past member District 7 Scholarship Committee, Maryland Board of Nursing Competency Committee, University of Maryland Nursing Alumni, Sigma Theta Tau Pi Chapter, American Association of University Women, and Vice Chair and past President Board of Directors of Harford Hospice Advisory Committee, Upper Chesapeake Home Care. She was a founding member of Harford Hospice. Mrs. Westing also was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School classes, Vacation Bible School, and served on several committees.
Mrs. Westing received numerous honors and awards, including 1991 Harford Community College Innovator of the Year Award, 1992 NISOD Teaching Excellence Award, 1992 AAUW Harford Branch Award for Outstanding Service, 1993 Harford Community College Excellence Award. 1994 MNA Outstanding Leadership Award, 1997 Harford Community College Professor Emerita, and also awards from Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honorary, and Outstanding Educators of America.
Mrs. Westing is survived by her husband of 35 years, Edward R. Westing; a daughter, Karen P. Watson and her husband, Greg Watson of Anacortes, Washington; and one brother, Dr. Page M. Huff and his family of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
