JOSEPH SZYMANIK, 83, of Bel Air died at Gilchrist Center, Towson on March 16, 2004. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Luckas and Catherine Wiecorek Szymanik. In 1978, after 20 years of service, he retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground where he worked as a wood model maker for the ballistic research labs on post.
Mr. Syzmanik served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He served on the U.S.S. Prosign, the U.S.S. Biddle and the U.S.S. Harris in the Navy Amphibious Forces, receiving meritorious commendations for service in action against enemy aircraft, shore batteries and mines in both the European and Pacific Campaigns.
Mr. Szymanik is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dolores Yahde Szymanik; two daughters, Darlene J. Seippel and her husband, J. Scott of Churchville; Michele Mayer and her husband, William H. Mayer, III of Mt. Savage, MD; two brothers, Stanley Szymanik of Baltimore; Edward Szymanik of Essex; three sisters, Laura Regulski of Essex; Jessie Wodka of Baldwin; Theresa Podowski of Baltimore; two grandchildren, Lauren L. Seippel of Churchville; Morgan Mayer of Mt. Savage, MD; two step-grandchildren, Megan Mayer Mathews of Cumberland; and William H. Mayer, IV of Norrisville.
