Joseph D. Boone

Joseph D. Boone, age 84, of Bel Air, MD, died on January 6, 2009 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. Born in Dunbar, WV, he was the son of the late Hazle Clarence and Macel Paxton Boone. A member of the U.S. Coast Guard in WWII, he served in the South Pacific aboard the LST 884. He taught for over 40 years in the public school system and was inducted into the Harford County Public Education Hall of Fame. He served as Camp Director for 15 years at Easter Seal Camp Fairlee Manor in Chestertown, MD. A member of the Bel Air United Methodist Church for 45 years, he made numerous mission trips, with his wife, to Russia, Alaska, and South Dakota. An avid sailor, camper, and traveler, he enjoyed working with wood and was a member of the Woodpeckers Club.

Mr. Boone is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rita Poffenbarger Boone of Bel Air, MD; children, Leigh A. McCusker and husband Hugh, of Bel Air, MD, Mary Jane Wilcox and husband, Larry, of Lancaster, PA, and J. Parker Boone and wife Lyn, of Grand Cayman; grandchildren, Melissa McCrea and husband, Bryan, Jennifer Wolsin and husband, Rob, Jeff Wilcox, Anne Wilcox, Ginny Boone, Nathan Boone, Elsie Boone, Carrie McCusker, and Lindsay McCusker; and two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Tanner McCrea.
