John Jeremy Rice

September 14, 1965 — February 23, 2018

Dr. John Jeremy Rice of Mohegan Lake, NY, native of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away unexpectedly on February 23, 2018. Jeremy was born on September 14, 1965 at Harford Memorial Hospital. He is a graduate of St. Margaret School, The John Carroll High School (’83), and received three degrees from the Johns Hopkins University Department of Biomedical Engineering: B.E.S. (’87), M.E.S. (’89), and Ph. D. (98). He completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship, Center for Computational Medicine & Biology from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1998.

A senior manager and Principal Research Staff Member in IBM's Healthcare & Life Sciences organization, Dr. Rice joined IBM Research in 2001 where he initiated the cardiac modeling program and championed neuroscience research effort. In the last two years, he also led the Blue Sky Project, using real-time data to monitor the progression of Parkinson's disease in patients. Motivated by his family's own journey, Dr. Rice was an advocate for both patients and scientists alike. At the time of his passing, he was also a member of the Adjunct Faculty, Department of Biomedical Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University, and the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Loyola University Chicago.

Dr. Rice, known as Jeremy by family and friends, was kind, gentle, funny, loving, and generous. He was a self-taught musician (harmonica, accordion, rubboard) and enjoyed camping, time with friends and family, and Cajun and zydeco dancing from Louisiana, to Baltimore, to New York. Since childhood, he vacationed in the summer with his family and cousins in the Outer Banks, and eventually met his future wife there at Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar. By virtue of his studies, work, travels and inclusive spirit, Dr. Rice collected friends from around the world who will remember him for his sense of humor, brilliance, enjoyment of music and dancing, love of his wife Laura and his family, and his efforts to always stay in touch.

Dr. Rice is survived by many family members who will miss him dearly: his beloved wife, Laura Rice, of Mohegan Lake, NY, his parents Joanne Horky Rice and Roger R. Rice of Bel Air, and his sister Gretchen Rice and husband Tim Terry of Iowa City, Iowa, sister Jessica Johnson and husband Richard Johnson of Oxford, MD, and sister Rachael Rice and husband Judge David Carey of Bel Air. He is survived by nieces and nephews who adored him: Maggie, Liam, Lila and Rosie Terry, and Emma and Molly Johnson, and dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins who held a special place in his heart. He was the grandson of the late J. Arlie and Maude Rice of Creswell and the late Dr. J. Ralph and Margaret Horky of Churchville.
