John H. Willig, Sr., of Fallston, a landscaper who owned and operated Stoney Batter Nursery since 1945, died at his home on Monday, Aug. 21. He was two weeks shy of his 90th birthday.
Born on Sept. 6, 1916 in Fork, MD, he was the son of the late Herman and Tressie Mast Willig of Kingsville. During World War II, he worked as a carpenter and grounds manager at Edgewood Arsenal. After the war, he opened Stoney Batter Nursery, which he operated (often single-handedly) until this past spring when ill health forced him to retire. An amateur boxer early in life, long-time softball player, and avid golfer through his senior years, he also raced motorcycles and was a lifetime member of the Baltimore Ramblers motorcycle club.
Mr. Willig is survived by his beloved wife, Mildred (nee Boschert) of Fallston, MD, and four sons, Keith Willig of Kingsville, MD, Craig Willig of Fallston, MD, Jeff Willig of Fork, MD, and Blaise Willig of Kingsville, MD. He was predeceased by a fifth son, John Willig, Jr. He is also remembered as a loving father-in-law, grandfather of 10, and great-grandfather of two.
Memorial contributions may be made to Harford Hospice, 8003 Corporate Dr., Suite G, Baltimore, MD 21236.
