John H. Davis

August 21, 1936 — June 29, 2013

John H. Davis, age 76, of Joppa, MD passed away on June 29, 2013 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. Born August 21, 1936 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Henry F. Davis and Elizabeth Streb. John married Rebecca R. Walker on June 1, 1956 in Middle River. He served in the Marines for four years, joining at the age of 17. He became a member of the Maryland Army National Guard on August 12, 1966 serving in the 1204th Transportation Co. He retired from the MDARNG on Feb 25, 1985. At 21 he joined the Maryland State Police working for many years in both Harford and Cecil Counties with his K-9 partner, King. In 1969 he joined the Aviation Division becoming one of the first four MSP Medevac Helicopter Pilots. He worked in the Aviation Division until his retirement from the Maryland State Police in 1979. Shortly thereafter he became an owner/operator and drove across country for Custom Transport and Cole Transport. John was also a volunteer for Joppa Magnolia Fire Company where he worked part time as a photographer for the Aegis taking pictures at accident scenes. His pastimes included watching Ravens Football, trips to Delaware Park and spending time with his family and eating Reeses peanut butter cups.

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Rebecca R. Walker Davis; sister, Hersey Kauff of Pinellas Park, FL; daughters, Rebecca Aronowitz and husband, Robert of Charlestown, Dianne Duncan and husband, Duane of Conowingo, MD and Mary Bazemore and husband, Douglas of Churchville, MD; son, John H. Davis II of Joppa, MD; and David Sexton and wife Lynn of White Hall, MD and Billie Merchel and husband, Ted of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Jeremy, Alex and Jack Aronowitz, Jennifer and Duane Duncan Jr., Shelly Burmeister and husband, Mark, Becca and Walker Bazemore; great grandchildren, Ryan and Dylan Burmeister. Other survivors include David and Todd Sexton and Tracy and Alison Merchel as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, George H. Davis and wife, Nancy.
