Joann Handlir, 81, of Abingdon Maryland, passed away on March 14, 2024 at her home with her family by her side.
Joann was born on May 28th, 1942 to Joseph and Ernestine (Stipes) Collins in Norton, Virginia. After completing school in Virginia, She went on to begin her career in hospitality which led her to relocating to Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 22 where she would build the remainder of her life. Joann brought with her Southern charm and radiated through her warm hospitality and prominent southern accent.
In the 1960s, Joann married Joseph Handlir, Sr in a courthouse ceremony in Baltimore. Joann and Joseph went on together having 9 beautiful children. She was a working mother, dedicated in her work as a head housekeeper and eventually breakfast bar attendant for the Best Western Hotel for 35 years. Joann kept a beautiful home where all were welcome.
In 2017, Joann retired from her hospitality and customer service career and spent her time enjoying retirement. From traveling to Ocean City, Maryland, Tennessee, Savannah, Georgia, San Antonio, Texas and Orlando, Florida. Her travels were spent with children and grandchildren building memories and revisiting her southern roots in which she was known for sharing many stories about.
Joann was predeceased by her husband Joseph Handlir, Sr her son Joseph Handlir Jr and her daughter Marjorie Scott. She is survived by her daughters Lisa McKinney (Douglass), Diane Anderson and Patricia Wadsworth (Scott); sons, Joel Handlir, Shannon Handlir, and David Handlir (Terri). She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren for all she would vocally share her pride as a grandmother.
Viewing services will be held at McComas Funeral Home in Abingdon on March 21st, 2024 from 6pm to 8pm and Graveside Funeral services on March 22nd, 2024 at Conowingo Baptist Church at 11am. Family will accept flowers.
