Jim Long, age 75, of Bel Air, MD, died on January 1, 2009 at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late John Thomas and Helen Sweeney Long. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served our country in the Korean War. Mr. Long was a graduate of Mt. St. Joseph High School and Loyola College. He earned his Masters Degree in mathematics from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME and a Masters in Theology from St. Mary's Ecumenical Institute in Baltimore, MD.
Mr. Long enjoyed a long and distinguished career in secondary education. He began his teaching career at Moses Brown School in Providence Rhode Island where he taught mathematics and was Head Lacrosse Coach. In 1964 he moved to John Carroll School in Bel Air as a founding faculty member where he was Chairman of the Math Department and Head Lacrosse Coach. Over his distinguished 35 year career at John Carroll he also served as Dean, Vice-Principal and Acting Principal as well as taught religious studies. As an administrator, he developed one of the first Modular Scheduling Systems in the country. As a lacrosse coach, he led John Carroll to early success in the competitive Maryland Scholastic Association and subsequently established the annual alumni lacrosse game which has drawn over 100 ex-John Carroll players. He left a lasting impression on students, athletes, and fellow faculty members for his commitment to learning, his embodiment of Christian values, and his desire for his students and fellow faculty members to succeed.
He was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Bel Air for the past 44 years where he was active in the spiritual and pastoral life of the church. He was also involved in a number of community organizations including the Colonial Acres Community Association, of which he was President. Throughout his life he enjoyed tutoring and mentoring young people and was always ready to help others in a quiet way.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Lacey Long of Bel Air, MD; three sons, James Edward Long Jr. of London, England, William Joseph Long of Hillsborough, CA and Peter Vincent Long of Palo Alto, CA; a daughter, Mary Lacey Wolfe of San Francisco, CA; two brothers, John Long of Waban, MA and William Albert Long of Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Helen Regina Reymann of Catonsville, MD, Sister Mary Regina Long G.S.S. of Halethorpe, MD and Anne Nevin of Westminster, MD; and 11 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Donald Nevin, Steve Nevin, Paul Reymann, John J. Mahle, Perry Mahle, William Mahle, Edward Miller and Joseph Iacchei and Honorary Pallbearers were the faculty and staff of John Carroll School.
