JAMIE RUTH SWAFFORD KALAVSKI, 79, formerly of Idlewild Road, Bel Air, died May 31, 2005 in Silver Spring, Md. Born in Litton, Tennessee, on March 10, 1926, she was the daughter of the late George Logan and Addie Hale Swafford. She graduated from Spring City High School, in Spring City, TN, in 1943, attended Berry College, in Mt. Berry, GA and graduated in 1953 from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She also did graduate studies at the University of Maryland and Copenhagen University in Denmark.
She married Paul Zachary Kalavski on July 30, 1949 in Washington, D.C. Paul, a systems analyst for the Department of Defense, died in 1994.
In 1962, she began her 25-year teaching career in the business department at Bel Air High School. She also taught part time at Harford Community College for several years.
Jamie and Paul were active duplicate bridge players, usually playing several times a week. They also enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the Caribbean. Jamie also enjoyed concerts, theater and art. Her hobbies were reading, sketching and painting.
She was a member of the Bel Air United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son Paul Zachary Kalavski, Jr., of North Potomac and a daughter Jean Kalavski Ryan, of Canastota, NY. and her husband James J. Ryan, Jr., a sister Mary C. Hembree, of Knoxville, TN, a brother-in-law Samuel P. Bible, of Summerville, GA, grandchildren Christopher Ryan, of Minneapolis, MN, Nicholas Ryan and Catherine Ryan, of Canastota and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers: Hooper E. Swafford, Homer E. Swafford, G. Sanford Swafford, Herbert H. Swafford and sisters Ruby A. Swafford, Geneva M. Swafford and Willie A. Bible.
