James R. Conaway, Ph.D.

James R. Conaway, Ph.D. retired in 1991 as Executive Director of the Junior Police & Citizens Corps in Washington, D.C., departed this life on February 8, 2016. Dr. Conaway or Bobby, as he was called by family and friends, was born on May 23, 1934 in Millsboro, DE. As a young boy he attended Millsboro Public Schools and Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church. He was a graduate of Lincoln Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Delaware State College, Federal City College in Washington, D.C., and he received a Doctorate in Psychology from Union Graduate School/Union College in Cincinnati, OH. He was a Korean War Veteran. He relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1958. During his career, he served as Director of the Corps for 24 years and as a counselor for seven years. The Corps is an agency geared to helping troubled youth, youth returning from incarceration and families in need. Dr. Conaway also served as an instructor and field coordinator for graduate students from Catholic University and Howard University. In addition, he was guest lecturer at Bowie State College, Howard University and St. Augustine's College in North Carolina.

He served on several boards and special committees: Prince George's County Mental Health Association, President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, D.C., Commission on Crime and Justice, and Prince George's County Government; Human Rights Advisory Commission for persons with disabilities.
He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Harmony Lodge #22 PHA, Jonathan David Consistory #1 AASR., 33rd Degree Mason Southern Jurisdiction and a member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Washington, D.C.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Barbara L. Conaway; one son Jacques R. Conaway, M.D. of Bel Air, MD; daughter-in-law Melissa K. Conaway, R.N. of Bel Air, MD; two grandchildren Ava J. Conaway and Gavin J. Conaway of Bel Air, MD; one sister, Mabel H. Conaway of Millsboro, DE; one brother Ernest B. Conaway of Fort Washington, MD; two nieces, Sheredia Langhorne of Riverdale, GA and Charissa Conaway of Brandywine, MD; other relatives and a host of friends.
