James Hilton McIlwain, age 78, of Bel Air, MD passed away on August 6, 2018 at his home. Born in Washington County, AL, he was the son of Robert Washington McIlwain and Allie (Wood) McIlwain. He retired in 1978 as a Master Sergeant with the US Army. He served three tours in Vietnam, and served in various locations such as Puerto Rico, Africa, and Germany. He worked for Granite Construction as a safety superintendent for the construction of the Ft. McHenry Tunnel and then he retired as a civilian facilities manager at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 2004. He enjoyed woodworking, bird watching, cooking and maintaining his award winning lawn, but he loved his grandchildren more than anything.
Mr. McIlwain is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carolyn R. McIlwain; three sons, Robert McIlwain of Puerto Rico, Timothy Stephen Clark, Jr., (Ernesta) of Forest Hill and Todd Alan Clark (Malissa) of Havre de Grace; two granddaughters, Anna Christina Lindner of Baltimore and Isabelle Ruth Clark of Havre de Grace; three grandsons, James Grant Clark of Forest Hill, Ethan James Clark of Havre de Grace and Lucas Alan Clark of Havre de Grace; sister, Jean Stevens of Waynesboro, MS; and many nieces & nephews. He also leaves behind his pride and joy, his dachshund, Zacky.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Joe Bill, and Roy McIlwain, sisters, Ada and Ester Taylor, Opal Daugherty and Dorothy Turner.
