James Joseph Scales, age 78, passed away at his home in Magnolia Delaware. He is survived by his husband of 45 years, William Tasker. James was the son of the late Ret. BCPD Sgt., John Joseph Scales and Irene Alverta Scales (Nightingale) of Gardenville, Baltimore City. He is predeceased by siblings BCPD Gordon Scales, BCPD John Scales and Elizabeth (Betty) Haacke. In addition to his husband he is survived by three sisters, Mary Webster of New Mexico, Shirley Caton of Maryland, Catherine Geiger of Delaware, a host of nieces and nephews and his fur-baby, Jaxson.
James proudly served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and worked for the Baltimore City Government for 44 years under six Mayoral Administrations until he retired in 2013. Jim and Bill made history on January 1, 2013 when they became the first same sex couple to wed in the state of Maryland. The service was officiated by the Honorable Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Coverage of the City Hall nuptials were seen around the world.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in James’ name to Metropolitan Community Church of Rehoboth, 19369 Plantation Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
