JAMES JOSEPH LOUGHREY, a retired manufacturing production supervisor, died on May 4, 2004 in Mariner Health, Bel Air, where he had lived since 1999. He was 88. Born in the Bronx, New York, he lived most of his life in New Jersey before moving to Bel Air in 1986. He was a communicant of St. Margaret Catholic Church. Mr. Loughrey graduated from St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, Newark, New Jersey, at the age of 16, and was a longtime member of its Alumni Association. He also attended St. Vincent’s College, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and Union College, Union, New Jersey. Employed by Simmons Company, Mr. Loughrey worked in Elizabeth, New Jersey most of his 46 years of service. From 1947-1950, he was plant manager of the Simmons Company Electric Blanket Division in Petersburg, Virginia. After retiring from the Simmons Company , he was employed as an income tax consultant for the Internal Revenue Service, Newark, New Jersey. He enjoyed the challenge of doing crossword puzzles, working in his organic vegetable garden, and is remembered as a generous man who was always willing to extend a helping hand. He welcomed the opportunity to travel extensively and considered touring Germany as one of his favorite trips. He was devoted to his family, especially his wife of 64 years, the former Dorothy Kaufman.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Loughrey is survived by two daughters, Barbara Shannon of Bel Air; Karen Wilson of Edinburg, Texas; one son, Terence Loughrey of Austin, Texas; four granddaughters, Karen Sorg of Bel Air; Sarah Wilson of Washington, D.C., Marianna Loughrey of Austin, Texas; Brennan Loughrey of Austin, Texas; two grandsons, James Roberts of Bel Air; Andrew Wilson of Austin; and three great-grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the St. Benedict’s Preparatory School Scholar’s Program, 520 Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Boulevard, Newark, New Jersey 07102-1314.
