James Houston Lewis Iii

James Houston Lewis III, age 72, of Bel Air, MD, passed away on May 10, 2014 at Bel Air Assisted Living in Bel Air. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, James was the son of the late James Houston Lewis Jr. and Ruth Mayer Lewis and husband of the late Kathleen McCormick Lewis. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force he graduated from Patterson High School in Baltimore in 1960. He attended Towson State University and received a degree in elementary education in 1969. He also earned a master's degree in Administration and Supervision from Towson State. In addition, he studied graduate course work at Loyola College.

Jim started his teaching career at Homestead Elementary School in 1969 as a fifth grade teacher. He taught at Homestead for three years and was promoted to assistant principal at Edgewood Elementary School. From 1976 to 1979, Jim was an assistant principal at Magnolia Elementary School and then at Homestead Elementary School. In 1979, Jim was promoted to principal at Slate Ridge Elementary School. In 1983, he became the principal at Hall's Cross Road's Elementary School and transferred to Churchville Elementary School in 1985. Jim retired in June 2001 after 32 years of service in the Harford County Public Schools.

He and his wife, Kate, a media specialist at Prospect Mill Elementary School, had been married for thirty three years.

Jim was an avid golfer and was a member of the Swan Creek Country Club for over twenty-five years. A passionate sports fan, Jim particularly loved the Baltimore Colts and Orioles. Jim also loved to read historical fiction and mystery novels.

In addition to his daughter, Erin E. Lewis of Bel Air, he is survived by his granddaughter, Cecilia E. Carfagno.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Ayers, Chris Carfagno, Donald, Patrick and Matthew McNeal, John, Richard and Patrick McCormick.
