James Elijah Fulghum, Jr.

July 13, 1931 — August 11, 2022

James (Jim) was born in Brooklyn, NY the son of Evelyn White and James Fulghum. He spent his young life in Louisburg, NC. His father was a physician, and his mother spent her later years in their home working at Louisburg Junior College. He went to Mars Hill College and Wake Forest University. He obtained his BA from Wake Forest and was active in the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Jim served two years in the Army and was stationed in Paris during the Korean War. 


 It was at Wake that he met his wife of 66 years Sara Mills. After his graduation he took a job with the federal government working for HEW. He was working in Statesville, NC when his first daughter Martha Susan was born. Due to his government job, he was reassigned to Dover, DE. It was here in 1959 that their second daughter Linda Ann was born. The next move was New Orleans, LA in 1960. The family was there for 2 years before moving to Arlington, VA.  Jim spent the remaining of his government career here. He did everything from glaucoma screening to Equal Opportunity Employment before he retired in 1981. Jim and Sara retired to China Grove, NC in 1981. In 1987 they bought a condo in SC. Jim loved playing tennis. It was his passion after retirement. He played regularly with a group in NC and SC. He also was very social, and they attended parties and sailed.

He is survived by his wife Sara, his two daughters Marty Hess (Brian)and Linda (David), his three grandsons Christopher Kaehny, Hunter Hess, and Harold Goodman, three great grandchildren, Ethan, Aaliya and Cassian. He has three surviving siblings in FL. Robert and Paul Fulghum and Barbara Foster. He is predeceased by his parents, and his sister Jane Hunter.
