J. Howard Smith, age 83, of Churchville, MD, died on February 25, 2009 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. Born in Aberdeen, MD, he was the son of the late William Ellsworth and Margaret Elizabeth Treadwell Smith. The manager of Western Maryland Dairy in Churchville in the late 1940's, he also owned and operated Maiden Lane Farm, on Thomas Run Road, for over 15 years. He was employed with Lockheed Martin as a Procurement Manager and retired from there after 35 years. He was a member of the Lions Club in Bel Air and the Izaak Walton League. An antique dealer for over 15 years, he enjoyed refinishing furniture, hunting, fishing, decoy carving, and stained glass artistry. He also enjoyed playing "Pitch" with his friends once a month, which he did for many years.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, C. Barbara Smith of Churchville, MD; stepsons, David H. Cahill Jr. of West Virginia and Michael B. Cahill and wife, Emily, of Louisiana; stepdaughters, Maureen M. Furst of Baltimore, MD and Sharon A. Bongiovanni and husband, David, of Baldwin, MD; brother, Charles E. Smith and wife, Mary Grace, of Bel Air, MD; eight grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Louis and Wilbur Smith.
