Howard N. Moxley

November 6, 1923 — July 26, 2013

Howard N. Moxley, age 89, of Darlington, MD passed away on July 26, 2013 at his home. Born in Sparta, NC he was the son of the late Treely Nathaniel and Ruth Carrie Moxley. Raised on a dairy farm, he was a Harford County resident most of his life. He founded the Moxley Sod Company where he acquired contracts to do work on such notable projects as Bainbridge Naval Base, Aberdeen Proving Ground, the construction of Interstate I-95, and Hunt Valley. Through his hard work, he acquired three Harford County farms. Upon his retirement from the Sod business, Howard continued his passion for farming on his beloved Nubbin Ridge Farm right up until his recent passing. He was an accomplished aviator who began flying at the early age of 16. He enjoyed recanting stories of he and his brother Bert's early barnstorming antics that confounded the local airport management and the local authorities. These stories became legendary to the early local residents. He and his family made several notable trips in their single engine aircraft that took them to Alaska, Mexico and into the far reaches of South America.

Mr. Moxley is survived by his daughters, Deborah Moxley Turner of Bel Air and Linda Lee Moxley and husband, Scott Kirkendall, of Havre de Grace; granddaughter, Olivia Peyton Kirkendall of Havre de Grace; and friend, Ida Poteet of Havre de Grace. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, John Nathaniel Moxley, brother, Bert Moxley and sister, Pauline Ruth Andrus.

Pallbearers were Scott Kirkendall, Mickey, Butch, Mike and Gary Moxley and Rick Schafer.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to Level Volunteer Fire Company, 3633 Level Village Road, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.
