HERBERT JENNINGS IRELAND, age 78, of Joppa, MD, died on August 19, 2008 at his home. Born in New Bern, NC, he was the son of the late Herbert Jennings and Blanche Bell Ball Ireland. A four year veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served our country during the Korean War. He graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC with a Master's degree in Arts and Music. As a professional trumpet musician he played Big Band music for the Carl Hamilton Band and religious music for local churches. As a teenager, he played TAPS when the service men came home to New Bern, NC and in the school band, played every time President Truman came to town. He was a Band Director and Music teacher in North Carolina, as well as, for Baltimore County schools for over 35 years. He had a love for music, sail boating, and he enjoyed photography.
Mr. Ireland is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Dows Ireland of Joppa, MD; two daughters, Donna Jean Ireland and Kathleen Tremblay, both of Providence, RI; four step-daughters, Donna Suzanne Breen of Pepperell, MA, Deborah Elizabeth Allen of Columbia, MD, Mary Margaret Goodman of Bel Air, MD, and Laura Virginia Grutkowski of Joppa, MD; six grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.
