Herbert E. Smith, age 78, of Bel Air, MD, passed away on August 11, 2012 surrounded by his family. Herb was born in West Terre Haute, IN to Herbert F. and Helen Long Smith. He is a graduate of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology where he graduated first in his class and received many academic honors. He earned his Masters in Electrical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and later became a licensed Professional Engineer in several states. He began his career at Bendix Radio in Towson, was a co-owner of CTI, Inc. which was bought by Siemens Corporation where he served as Vice President of the company. He was in charge of building the Siemens plant in Boca Raton, FL. After retiring from Siemens Corporation he returned to Maryland and worked for AAMSA at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds until he retired in 1999.
Herb is survived by his wife of 59 years, Katherine Reik Smith, sons, David B. Smith and wife Kelly and grandchildren Katherine Jeannette and Bradley Allen of Catonsville, MD, Mark A. Smith and wife, Cindylu and grandchildren Isaac and Alison of Athens, OH and Paul C. Smith of Bel Air, MD and his sister Marian Williams of Mathews, VA, and niece and nephews.
Herb and family lived in several states during his career. He was active in the Methodist Church wherever he lived serving as Sunday School teacher, Finance Chairperson, Treasurer, Trustee and singing in the choir. He currently attended Union Chapel United Methodist Church and was a member of Kingdom Bound Men's Chorus. He was always active in the community having memberships in the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and Rotary. He was active in Harford Habitat for Humanity and served as their first hired professional Construction manager.
Members of the Kingdom Bound will serve as pallbearers.
