Helen Toney Pegram, of Joppa, Maryland, departed her earthly life on May 8, 2006 at Bel Air Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born on November 29, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Walker and Roena Virginia Davis Toney of Toney Creek, West Virginia.
As a young woman, Helen Pegram served our nation’s defense industry during World War II as a crane operator in Baltimore’s Western Electric Company and as postmistress of Dothan, West Virginia, Post Office, both before the age of 22. In addition, during the Vietnam era she supported the defense industry as an employee of Bata Shoe Company’s combat boot manufacturing division at Belcamp, Maryland. She also worked at the Silver Top Manufacturing Corp. of Baltimore. Helen’s Christian ministry was characterized by her hospitality to the saints. She spent many hours visiting sick and mourning friends in her community. She was active in the Churchville Golden Age Club and cherished those friends as well as those from her neighborhood and in her church. She enjoyed making quilts and had participated in the West Virginia PTA in the Dothan Elementary School.
She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Clarence C. Pegram; two daughters, Linda Pegram of Joppa, Maryland and Norma M. Townsley and her husband, Charles M. Townsley of DeWitt, Virginia; two grandchildren, Nathan and Jyoti Townsley, both of DeWitt, Virginia; and two brothers, John Toney of Eleanor, West Virginia and Fred Toney of Weatherford, Texas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sally Webb and five brothers, Luther, Lewis, Lionel, Leonard, and Leslie Toney.
