HELEN SPAHR WALKER, daughter of Henry and Mary Ellen Spahr, passed away on February 16, 2008, at the age of 86. Helen Walker was born and raised on a farm near Dover, Pennsylvania. She not only attended a one-room school house as a child, but also taught her first two years as a teacher in a one-room school house in York County. Mrs. Walker graduated from Millersville State Teachers College in 1943. She taught elementary school in Harford County for several years before starting a family. Mrs. Walker was known as an avid gardener, an excellent cook, and a friend to many. She loved talking with people. She liked to travel, and once found the courage to get on an airplane to visit her daughter in Japan. She was a cancer survivor. In 1981, she and her husband moved from Bel Air to Charlottesville, VA where she was very active in church work. They moved back to Maryland in 2002: Bel Air's Avondell became their current home. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Phoenix, MD.
She is survived by her husband, John R. Walker of Bel Air, MD and their three children, Robert Walker and his wife, Karen, of Bel Air, MD, Rosemary Walker of Chesterton, IN, and Richard Walker and his wife, Mary, of Chevy Chase, MD. Her grandchildren are Matthew Walker and his wife, Samantha, of Hagerstown, MD, Rose Ellen Sieracki and her husband, Eric, of Perry Hall, MD, and Caroline Walker of Chevy Chase, MD. She is also survived by her brothers, Eugene Spahr of Dover Township, PA and Richard Spahr of York, PA; and her sisters, Ruth Allen of York, PA and Eva Hoffman of Baldwin, MD.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in her name to a favorite charity.
