Helen M. Nicholas

HELEN M. NICHOLAS, age 75, of Abingdon, died at the home of her daughter on September 4, 2003. Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late John Bernard and Georgina M. Heaton Spangler, and the wife of the late Franklin F. Nicholas. She had retired from the U.S. Government after 30 years of service as an Administrative Assistant at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Edgewood Arsenal. She was a member of the following groups: a life member of the Abingdon Volunteer Ladies Auxiliary from 1951 to present; the Alumnae Association of the Catholic High School of Baltimore from 1946 to present; the Bel Air Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People; the NARFE Chapter # 1770 of Bel Air; and the AARP Bel Air Chapter #436 serving as the historian, the committee for Independent Living, the committee for Widowed Persons Service, and the legislative committee. She was also a Harford Hospice volunteer of Fallston and a volunteer for the Harford County Health Department. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and a member of the Golden Girls of Cokesbury Methodist Church.

Mrs. Nicholas is survived by two sons, Dennis M. Nicholas and his wife, Darlene of North East; Timothy M. Nicholas and his wife, Jane of Aberdeen; one daughter, Shirley M. Kern and her husband, Donald P. Kern of Aberdeen; one brother, Bernard E. Spangler of Ocean City; one sister, Margaret M. Sica of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, David P. Kern of Edgewood; Christopher M. Kern of Aberdeen; Gregory T. Kern of Aberdeen; and Robin K. DePew of Rising Sun; and a god daughter, Cayti Abbott of Joppa.

Pall bearers were David Kern, Christopher Kern, Gregory Kern, Bruce Riley, Chip Riley, Bernie Spangler, and John Spangler.
