Harriet R. Brown

Harriet R. Brown, 95, died on Friday April 3, 2015 at The Blakehurst Retirement Community in Towson, where she has lived since 2004. Born on October 22, 1919 in Havre de Grace, MD, Harriet was the daughter of Augustus Freeborn Brown and Mary J. Busch. She attended Harford County Public Schools graduating from Havre de Grace High School in 1936. She then went to the University of Maryland for two years followed by Bard Avon Business School.

Harriet held secretarial positions at Aberdeen Proving Ground and later for several law firms in Baltimore, commuting by train from Havre de Grace. When the family moved to Baltimore in 1949 she was able to complete her college degree at Loyola College, going to classes at night for several years.

She began her teaching career in Baltimore County where she taught in 2nd and 3rd grades in public and Catholic schools. In 1962, the family returned to Harford County settling in Bel Air. Harriet taught 3rd grade at Bel Air Elementary for more than 20 years. She retired in 1984.

Harriet was a very quiet, gentle, thoughtful, and generous person with both family and friends. She had a quick wit and always a ready answer when challenged.

Miss Brown is survived by her sister, Charlotte Brown Harlan of the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, MD. She is predeceased by her brothers, Freeborn and Carroll, who were members of the law firm Brown, Brown and Brown in Bel Air. She is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews, Augustus F. Brown, J. Patrick Brown, Thomas F. Brown, Mary Louise Brown Hullana, Michael D. Brown, Teresa Brown McInerny, Edwin H. W. Harlan III, Ann Harlan Fortucci, Patricia Harlan Sanders and Mary Margaret Harlan Records.

Memorial contributions may be made in Harriet's memory to St. Margaret Catholic Church, 141 Hickory Avenue, Bel Air, MD 21014 or Alzheimer's Disease Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093 or a charity of your choice.
