Gould Osgood Macintire

June 19, 1910 — October 26, 2004

GOULD O. MACINTIRE, age 94, of Aberdeen, MD, died at his residence on October 26, 2004. Born in Wilmington, Delaware on July 19, 1910, he was the son of the late Benjamin Gould and Eva Camille Osgood Macintire, and the husband of the late Frances Eugenia Davis Macintire. He lived most of his life in Harford County, MD, growing up on the shores of Bush River. He also had close family ties in East Sumner, Maine and Georgetown, S.C. He graduated from the University of Baltimore and began working as a Certified Public Accountant. This career was cut short however in January of 1942 when he was called into the service of his country during WWII. After training, he became a member of the US Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps. His responsibilities included protecting the docks in Liverpool, England from Nazi saboteurs and assisting with the security of the Allied Headquarters in London. During this time, he worked closely with Scotland Yard and developed bonds there that lasted a lifetime. After the invasion of France, he was sent in to investigate and identify French citizens that had assisted the Nazis during the occupation. He was assigned a driver to escort him throughout northern France and into Germany. He soon discovered that his driver had several assignments with regard to Sgt. Macintire – drive him where he needed to go, protect him from snipers and capture if possible, and kill him if not. He managed to avoid at least one sniper attack.

Although his adventures may seem exciting in retrospect, it was difficult to get him to talk about those experiences. For many, even the decades could not erase all of the pain form the war’s death and destruction.
Upon his return to the States in September 1945, Staff Sgt. Gould Macintire was honorably discharged and resumed civilian life. He worked for Wilson-Oliver Insurance Agency in Aberdeen, MD for close to forty years.

The most significant event of his life, however, happened just prior to his induction into the US Army. He met, fell in love with, and married Frances Eugenia Davis of Baltimore. Upon his return from the war, they wasted no time in beginning a family and had three children. They raised their children in a home in Perryman, MD, and remained there until their deaths; hers on May 16, 2002 and his on October 26, 2004.

He was a loving husband and father who enjoyed the water, animals, working with his hands and country living. With his quick wit, he could always bring a smile to someone’s face. Perhaps the best way to describe Gould Macintire can be summarized in a few words – a true gentleman. He was loved and respected by all who knew him
Mr. Macintire is survived by three children, Judy A. Stup of Frederick, MD, Marc D. Macintire of Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia, and C. Lynn Macintire of Perryman, MD; four grandchildren, Lauren D. Koogle of Frederick, MD, Joel L. Stup of Frederick, MD, Michael B. Macintire of Auburn, AL and Rebecca H. Macintire of Auburn, AL; and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte D.
