Gloria D. Matthews

GLORIA D. MATTHEWS, age 83, of Joppa, MD, died on January 13, 2007, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. Born in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Alvina Rebecca Bien Thielemann, and wife of the late Wayne T. Matthews. Her family moved to Joppa in 1950. She was very civic and community oriented and loved people, especially children. She was a member of Grandview Christian Church, the Wilna Homemakers Club, and was a founding member and Board member emerita of the Little Gunpowder Improvement Association. She was a Republican election judge for many years and a Brownie Scout Troop leader for 32 years. A prize winning artist, she attended the Maryland Institute of Art where she worked with water colors, oil, and pastels creating portraits, landscapes and still life. She brought much beauty and joy to her friends and family.

She is survived by her son, Wayne T. Matthews Jr., of Chesapeake, VA; a daughter, Gloria W. Moon, and her husband, Allan G. Moon, of Joppa, MD; one brother, Henry B. Thielemann of Ellicott City, MD; three grandchildren, Curt A. Matthews of Joppa, MD, Robin Crawford of Baltimore, MD, and Lloyd J. Moon of Carrollton, VA; two great-grandchildren, Cheralyn Crawford of Baltimore, MD, and Chad Crawford of North Carolina; a great-great-grandson, Nathaniel Patrick Morris of Baltimore, MD; and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, John A. Thielemann.
