George W. Barenz, age 86, of Bel Air, MD, died on September 28, 2008 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. Born in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late William Henry and Elizabeth Catherine Bambrick Barenz and husband, of 59 years, of the late Regina Barenz. A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he served our country during WWII. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. His love of children lead him to a second career as a bus driver and he had a passion to portray Santa Claus at many Christmas parties and homes. Mr. Barenz and his wife, Regina, were honored by the Maryland State Department of Education and WJZ-TV in 1985, and again by Bishop Newman in 1996, for their outstanding service to John Carroll School. They were awarded the Archdiocesan Medal of Honor, which is given to recognize outstanding dedication to the service of others. They were considered to be "volunteers extraordinaire", having been involved in the school and in student life since 1969. Their tender devotion to one another, was inspirational to students, faculty, and parents alike.
Mr. Barenz is survived by his sister, Mildred Prior of Chicago, IL, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Anne Barenz.
