GEORGE “LEO” WERNEKE, SR., age 80, of Fallston, MD, died on May 3, 2006 at his home. Born in Fallston, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph J. and Margaret Cole Werneke. A lifelong resident of Harford County, he joined the US Army in 1947. He was a dairy farmer in his earlier years before becoming a self-employed carpenter, from which he retired in 1983. He was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church until 1987, and St. John’s Catholic Church in Long Green since that time. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His family said that he was an avid hunter who also loved to fish and crab. They said that he enjoyed his garden and raising his fruit trees.
Mr. Werneke is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frances Margaret Werneke of Fallston, MD; six sons, Edward L. Werneke of New Bern, NC, Robert F. Werneke of Portsmouth, VA, Stephen A. Werneke of Uncertain, TX, John A. Werneke of Havre de Grace, MD, George L. Werneke, Jr. of Bel Air, MD and William A. Werneke of Forest Hill, MD; one daughter, Cheryl Ann Zimmerer of Forest Hill, MD; one sister, Marie Bennett of White Marsh, MD; and 17 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two grandsons, Joseph H. Werneke and Jared J. Werneke.
Pallbearers will be Edward L. Werneke, Robert F. Werneke, Stephen A. Werneke, John A. Werneke, George L. Werneke, Jr., William A. Werneke, Steve Zimmerer and Roy Parks.
