George L. Cole

GEORGE L. COLE, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and attended Purdue University. He died at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center on June 12, 2003 at the age of 83. He was married to the late Lois O’Brien of Indianapolis, Indiana, and is survived by his son, John L. Cole of Bel Air; and daughters, Linda E. Belz of Kirkwood, Missouri, and Marien L. Cole of Bel Air, as well as eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother, Dr. J. Wayne Cole, and is survived by one brother, Robert Cole of Peabody, Kansas and one sister, Joan Cole of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Mr. Cole served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps during WW II and the Korean War, and later in the U.S. Army Reserve. During his military service, he held every rank from private to Lt. Colonel, and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. Between WW II and the Korean period, Mr. Cole spent several years as Assistant Project Engineer at the Glidden Company construction project in Indianapolis, Indiana. He later joined Civil Service with the CmlC Material Command, and retired as the R&D Program Manager at the former Chemical Systems Laboratory at APG. Following retirement, Mr. Cole was employed part-time in an advisory capacity to the Project Manager for Chemical Demilitarization for one year, and one year as assistant to the Technical Director of Chemical Systems Laboratory.

Simultaneously, he was an active member and officer at the Presbury United Methodist Church in Edgewood, and was a Certified Methodist Lay Speaker. Also, he found time to be a realtor in Harford County for five years.

Mr. Cole spent more than 35 years in the model train hobby, and belonged to 15 organizations, military and civilian.
