George Alexander Levis, age 107, of Belcamp, MD passed away February 16, 2017 at Lorien Riverside in Belcamp, MD. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he was the son of the late Robert Ellis and Anne (Austen) Levis, and was the husband of the late Betsy Ann Levis. Aviation was his passion and airplanes were in his blood. At the age of 9 he saw a flying boat in Bantry Bay, Ireland, and at that moment he knew he wanted to be a pilot. He came to America at age 16 by himself aboard the RMS Aquatania. He cleared customs in Ellis Island, New York and traveled by train to Detroit, Michigan. After starting his first job he signed up for classes at Cass Technical High School where he received his license as an A&P mechanic. George's first aviation job was with the Stinson Aircraft Corporation fabricating aircraft parts. He later was employed by the Lycoming Corporation in Williamsport, PA where he was a flight mechanic. Later he was in Sales and flew across American demonstrating their newest aircraft engine. While demonstrating their newest engine he had six forced landings without incident. Later George was employed by the Koppers Company as the Sales Manager of the Industrial Fan Department. The last time he flew, was as a co-pilot of a J3 Cub at the age of 103 with his 85 year old friend who was the pilot. He was a member of F&M Lodge #106 in Williamsport, PA where in 2015 he celebrated 70 years of brotherhood. George is also a member of the Quiet Birdman fraternity, where he was their oldest member. George visited his family in Ireland as frequently as possible, crossing the Atlantic Ocean aboard many of the ocean liners of the Cunard fleet. His last trip to Ireland was a solo trip in 2014 aboard the R.M.S. Queen Mary II at age 103.
Mr. Levis is survived by his daughter, Susan L. Hudson and her husband, James, of Aberdeen; grandchildren, Kimberly Connelly, of Towson, Gregory S. Lumpkin and his wife Noelle, of White Marsh, and Christopher D. Lumpkin and his wife Stacey of Fallston; a brother, Dudley Levis and his wife Elsie of Leyland, England; great grandchildren, Taylor Lumpkin, Cassidy Lumpkin, Alexa Lumpkin, Hannah Connelly, Connor Lumpkin, Colin Connelly, Benjamin Lumpkin and Noah Lumpkin. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert Ellis Levis, Jr.
