GENTRY GLENN PHIPPS, age 94, of Darlington, died at his home on December 14, 2003. Born in Alleghany County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Joseph Thomas and Myrtle Lee DeBord Phipps, and the husband for 34 years of the late Notra Elizabeth Phipps and he was the husband for 20 years to his first wife, Grace M. Phipps. He worked as a train engineer for 27 years on Edgewood Arsenal. He lived in the Maryland area for over 75 years. He belonged to the Welcome Home Freewill Baptist Church for 48 years. He enjoyed gardening, sports, and his new car.
In addition to his first wife, Mr. Phipps is survived by three sons, Gene L. Phipps
of Bel Air; Joseph C. Phipps of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Paul G. Phipps of Brogue, Pennsylvania; two daughters, G. Marie Olinger of Darlington; Elizabeth Sue Drumgoole of Westminster, Maryland; two sisters, Bertha Davis of Darlington; Sally Weisenberg of North Carolina; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his wife, Notra, he was predeceased by one son, Wesley G. Phipps; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be: Glen Olinger, Stephen Olinger, Dennis Phipps, Jeffrey Phipps, Daniel Baity, and David Cross. Honorary pallbearers will be: Justin Cross, Timothy Olinger, Nathan Olinger, and John Ryan.
