Frederick A. Stam, age 86, of Fallston, MD passed away on January 13, 2019 at his home. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the only child of Alfred Eric and Margaret Ann (Gage) Stam. He was a kind, patient and gentle man able to remember details from every stage in his life. He shared stories from his youngest days of solo journeys taking the trolley down Flatbush Ave to get to Grandma’s (age 4) or riding the ferry to NJ (age 11) to finish the school year after a move back to Manhattan.
He graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, MN and John Marshall Law School in Chicago, IL. He served as Secretary to the Committee on Rating of Mental and Physical Impairment for the American Medical Association for 11 years. Fred retired in 1986 from the Social Security Administration as a policy analyst after more than 20 years of service. He was logical and certainly a math wizard in the eyes of his family, computing answers to several decimal places in his head when asked to calculate.
Fred was introduced to his bride, Barbara Blumenschein, as they both left a church service at St. Chrysostom's Episcopal Church in Chicago. They were married 57 years at the time of his passing. Their three children, Eric (Donna Baker) Stam of Pikesville, MD, Darrell (Linda Szabiet) Stam of Hollis, NH, and Amy Stam of Bainbridge Island, WA were with him at his passing. Five grandchildren Kristin Stam, Andrew and Julia Stam, Halle and Larsen Braswell, and great-grandson Josiah (Braswell) Williams are his legacy.
He was interested in genealogy and stamp collecting. Fred and his family traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe exploring heritage, historical and spectacular sites. He enjoyed woodworking, "puttering" around the house, and investing. He attended First Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, MD. His favorite color was blue and a favorite treat was a brown-cow root beer float. Fred can be remembered as a very supportive man with a quick wit and sly humor. He quietly created the underpinning integral to the structural integrity of his family.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Maryland Public Television, 11767 Owings Mills Blvd. Owings Mills, MD 21117; www.mpt.org/support or to Michael J.
